DIY Birdie Mobile

A few weeks back, we were all anticipating the arrival of a new niece or nephew and I wanted to get something colorful and cute to decorate the nursery with. After browsing Etsy for several hours I came upon a few that I liked, but the prices were a bit out of my budget. So, I thought hey...why not make my own...{so ya, I kind of got the idea from one that I loved, so it's not totally original, but I love it anyway!}

This is what I made...

Basically, I used the cardboard from a diaper box and traced out my bird shapes. I then layed each piece of cardboard between a layer of felt and material {cut into bird shapes} and hand stitched around the edges with colorful embroidery thread. I used the same cardboard and materials to make wings. I attached the wing to the bird with buttons and hung the birds at varying heights from an embroidery hoop wrapped in ribbon...

Most mobiles are hung with the pretty parts facing the sides, but with this one, the mobile is facing down, making the birds pretty for baby, not mom and dad!

I hope sweet little Khloe loves it as much as I do!

Westyn's Nursery

Check it out Here

With tons of inspiration from Spearmint Baby, Chic & Cheap Nursery and Pinterest ( I am addicted!), I knew I wanted this nursery 'makeover' to have a neutral background of gray and lots of pops of color. Since we knew we were having another boy I definitely wanted a 'boy feel' this time around in contrast to our gender neutral green nursery before, and I had to do it on a limited budget! I tried to re purpose pieces from around the house and ended up spending only $230 to complete it! Most of this was spent on new curtains, paint, hardware and my DIY projects!! I love how it all turned out!

Before

After
I apologize for the dark pictures-it's been raining here the past three days and the room is dark to begin with!

I stumbled upon a printed quilt from Dandelion Baby and immediately fell in love with the colors, and the room grew from there! The curtains were ready made panels I found at IKEA for $29.99, and all the bedding was from Gray's nursery, which I made myself. The only thing I changed was the stripe of color on the crib skirt with some quick iron on tape!

The display boxes had been sitting around since before Gray was born, I think we only had one up in his room. So I dug the rest out and added cute printed paper to the background and tada! The toy cars are from The Talking Tree on Etsy...so cute!

Westyn loves his mobile! Well, maybe not quite yet, but he will! I love how it hangs over the middle of the crib in front of the window, it frames everything perfectly!

My favourite part of the room is the dresser. This was my dresser from when I was a teenager, and it has followed me around ever since. Having a part of my childhood in the room where my son will grow up is kinda cool! The rocking chair was a gift from a friend when Gray was born.

This is what the dresser looked like before.
What a difference a coat of paint makes and some new hardware!

The shelves provide much needed storage...you may recognize the shelves from the master bedroom closet before it's transformation. I found this cool 'tool box' looking piece at Homesense for $10.99 and it fits all Westyn's socks and shoes perfectly! The baskets were all part of the previous nursery and are from IKEA.

Another DIY project that I did was this yarn covered 'W'. All the materials were purchased from the Dollar Store for $3! Score!

What better way to use up leftover material after hemming the curtains? Add some felt and voila...a pillow! My inspiration for this pillow came from Etsy.

The shelf above the change table is super handy for creams and displaying toys and was also part of the previous nursery. Westyn's name art was a gift.

The footstool was a new addition to the room and I don't know how I lived without it before! I found it on sale at WalMart for $14.99. The top comes off for storage, which is perfect, the black microfiber material it came in was not so perfect! Definitely in need of a slipcover! After researching a few tutorials online, I finally got out my sewing machine and after 3 hours, I finished a somewhat ok looking slipcover! Just don't look too close!

So there you have it! I finished the nursery last week-only 6 weeks too late! Haha! Oh well, I'm sure Westyn didn't mind a bit!

Nursery Sneak Peak

It's almost ready! Ready to the point that if the baby came right now, it would be OK. But I am still playing with a few things and have yet to personalize it with baby Pea Pod's name (which we are narrowing down, finally!). I am absolutely loving how it is turning out!

Here is your sneak peak...

{Nursery Decor} A little birdie told me...

...about this super cool baby nursery! Actually, it was a really good friend of mine who designed and created this beautiful little haven for her soon (less then a week) to arrive baby boy.

Hand sewn birds..so cute! And I love how the yellow and green complement the soft shades of blue in the room!

I have been a little nursery crazy for the last little bit, trying to get all the details in order for our own 'baby pea pods' room, so seeing her completed room is making me a bit jealous! But that's ok, it just means I really like it!!

Lot's of ideas!

j
Since we found out we are having another boy, my head has been filled with all sorts of ideas for a new nursery. Actually, that's a lie..I've been dreaming about it for a while, although the pink and frills have turned into shades of blue and maybe not so much frills! I love the room we have now, it's sweet, gender neutral and practical. Buuuuut...when the opportunity presents itself, I have to take advantage of it, right? Since this will be little 'Pea Pods' room for a while, we might as well finish it off with a bang. Once Gray moves into his big boy room, hopefully in the New Year, we can start the process. I am torn between the bright colors that I am usually attracted to and the more muted tones of soft grey and beige...so I may just have to come up with something that marries the two! In the meantime, my dreaming has resulted in a file on my computer full of beautiful rooms...
