Some Kitchen Dreams...

So some of you may know that we are taking on (very soon!) a kitchen reno. The reason behind this begins with an old house. Built in the 1950's. Original kitchen. Original tap. PROBLEMO! Tap leaks like Niagara Falls!!! We've lived here for about 7 years and while I love the charm of our 1.5 story home, I do not love the problems that we have had with it. Out kitchen facet for instance has always had a bit of a dribble. But in the last month, it has gotten progressively worse. Why didn't we just change the facet you ask? Well, because after having several plumbers in and trying the diy route of replacing the taps, it seems that the ancient placement (out of the wall, onto the countertop) of our tap was an issue. Plumbers laughed at us, saying they hadn't seen a tap like that for at least 20 years. We must have been the last ones on the planet to still have one...

Anyway, long story short it's leading to a kitchen reno, that I can't wait to do!!I just need to here back from the guys who we have hired to do it...I hate waiting...pet peeve of mine-waiting for someone else!!!!

Let's go through the list of issues with my kitchen shall we...




Our 'beautiful' (I say that very lightly!) charm filled 50's kitchen...complete with unfunctional cabinets, countertops, a leaky facet, old yellow vinyl counters and lots of other quirks....

So while we can't really change the positioning of where our kitchen is in our house. We are stuck with the galley/one line of cabinets...but I can make it significantly more attractive and functional.

First, you probably can't tell from the photos but our counter height is for midgets! Mike is 6'3" and our counters should be about 3 " taller then they are to reach standard height. Plus, to hide the plumbing for our inwall facet, we have a false backsplash the takes two inches off the depth of the countertops, making them narrow and useless! So I am super excited to actually get standard size anything!!!!

Some other changes....

I am adding pot drawers! Currently our cabinets do not fit a regular sized plate in them...so our plates are stored in our cabinet in our dining room... I can't wait for regular sized cabinets!!!
The dishwasher is currently on the other side of the room, so it is being installed next the the sink!
The sink is moving over so that it is centered below the window-it will become just a single sink.
We are getting an over the range microwave/fan...which makes more counterspace!
OH, and speaking of counterspace, did you see that lovely 'yellow vinyl type i dunno what it is' countertop...yep, that's going too!

Step 1 was to replace the galvanized pipes to the kitchen sink & taps...and replace our leaky facet!! Because we really couldn't have lived with that for any longer!

Mike was upset that I was taking photos and he was in his pj's...oh well...

So the running facet is gone and in it's place or rather over a bit is our shiny new facet 'temporariy' while we wait for our kitchen cupboards to be made. It's a bit of an eye sore with a crumbling drywall and old brown glue all over but oh, well....it's the price you pay to save water!

So while my kitchen won't be my 'dream' kitchen as we plan to sell in a couple, 3 or 4 years, it certainly will be much more functional and pretty to look at and it's not going to break the bank either. I plan on taking our standard laminate, thermofoil cabinets and run of the mill fixtures to new heights with lots of charm and funky accessories (more diy's!Yay!)...
